Are Dental Implants Painful? What to Expect Before and After Treatment

2 min read

The idea of having a dental implant placed can sound daunting. In fact, one of the most common concerns patients have isn't whether an implant will work – it's whether having one will hurt.

Quick answer

Dental implant surgery is carried out with appropriate anaesthesia to keep you comfortable during treatment. Afterwards, some soreness, swelling or tenderness is normal while the area begins to heal, but your dental team will explain what to expect and how to manage your recovery.

For particularly anxious patients, IV sedation is also available at Saltford Dental.

What happens when a dental implant is fitted?

A dental implant is placed into the jawbone to provide a stable foundation for a replacement tooth.

At Saltford Dental, implant surgery is carried out by Dr Liliana Ruzzene, Specialist Oral Surgeon and Implantologist.

Liliana has worked in implantology since 1990 and has extensive experience in implant placement, oral surgery, bone grafting and complex implant cases.

Will I feel the implant being placed?

Your clinical team will make sure the treatment area is appropriately anaesthetised before beginning.

Although you may be aware that dental treatment is taking place, the aim is for you to remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

If anything worries you, discussing it at your consultation is important. Understanding what will happen before treatment often makes the experience feel considerably less intimidating.

How will I feel afterwards?

Implant placement is a surgical procedure, so some discomfort afterwards can be expected.

You may experience tenderness or swelling around the treated area. The amount varies between individuals and can also depend on the complexity of the procedure.

You'll receive personalised aftercare advice explaining how to look after the area and what to expect during healing.

What if I'm extremely nervous?

You are certainly not alone.

Dental anxiety affects people of all ages, including patients who otherwise feel completely comfortable with medical treatment.

Saltford Dental offers IV sedation from £350 per hour for suitable nervous patients.

Rather than avoiding treatment because you're anxious, tell the team how you feel. It allows your treatment to be planned with your anxiety in mind.

Is a complicated implant more painful?

The experience and recovery from implant treatment vary according to the procedure required.

Some patients require straightforward placement of a single implant, while others may need additional procedures such as bone augmentation.

Liliana's background as a Specialist Oral Surgeon means she also manages complex surgical and bone-grafting cases.

Your consultation is where the complexity of your individual treatment can be assessed and explained.

How much does implant treatment cost?

At Saltford Dental:

  • Implant consultations start from £85

  • Single implants start from £3,650

  • CBCT scans start from £215

  • Implant-supported dentures start from £10,000

  • Full-jaw treatment starts from £15,000

Finance options are also available, subject to eligibility.

Considering dental implants?

If fear of pain has been stopping you from investigating dental implants, an initial consultation can be a much easier first step.

You can discuss your concerns, understand your options and ask questions without committing to treatment.

Saltford Dental welcomes patients from Saltford, Keynsham, Bristol and Bath for implant consultations with Dr Liliana Ruzzene.
